Cancer has recently topped heart disease as the nation’s number one killer.(1) This seems to be good news for the fight against heart disease. But when you look a little closer, there’s little cause for celebration.
The raw data shows the number of people with both cancer and heart disease is actually increasing, even though the rates of death are decreasing. That means more people are living with the burden of these diseases. This is not my idea of winning the fight.
Yet avoiding – and even reversing – heart disease is currently within your reach, and today I’ll show you how.
According to the American Heart Association (AHA), death rates from heart disease fell 18% between 1992 and 2002.(2) This is largely due to advanced technology and a high level of emergency care.
Since more people are surviving and living with heart disease, the number of people in need of long-term medical care is increasing. The AHA expects 40 million Americans over 65 to have heart disease by 2010 – that’s nearly 50% more than in 2002!(3) For the big drug makers, that means more sales and bigger profits.
This continuing increase in people with heart disease is occurring despite decades of recommendations for one simple reason. For the last fifty years, Americans have followed misleading information about heart disease:
- Fat makes you fat. The American Heart Association links dietary fat to heart disease and recommends that you eat a low-fat diet. But dietary fat is NOT to blame. In fact, low-fat diets only make the problem worse.
- You need to exercise an hour every day. The government’s National Institute of Health, (NIH) tells us we need 60 minutes of exercise every day. But this type of prolonged cardiovascular exercise mimics stress and breaks down vital heart muscle. Long cardio workouts are not only a waste of your time; they actually cause additional health problems.
- You need to keep your cholesterol below 200 points. The current strategy of monitoring cholesterol to manage heart health is ineffective. The drugs are dangerous and actually weaken your cardiovascular system.
